Surin West Cultural Center, and the Food is Great Too

In the previous post, I barely mentioned that Surin is a Thai restaurant. In addition to great food, what is the draw of Surin? For an interculturalist, the fact that one seems to step into an entirely different world within a few feet is transformative. The large photos of Thailand on the walls, the staff, the music and of course, the food, take me into another space.

If I am by myself, I sit at the bar and eat the usual. Since having my son, I usually grab 'to go' items. I frequently run into new-old friends meaning we developed a relationship after I graduated from college. One is often greeted by someone from Thailand, India or Nepal. I also meet new people from Birmingham, visitors who are residing at the Pickwick, or people who like Thai food. 'To go' often leads to eating at the bar from the 'to go' box as I attempt to multitask--eat and catch up on their lives.

Surin's Martinis and desserts were good enough for them to open a late night cafe where the Sushi Bar is now. Only one of my desserts remains--the ginger lime square. I love just about anything with ginger in it.

Although Surin pipes in satellite radio or something like that, I refer to all funky, electro, techno, fusion music as Surin music. I developed a love for Six Degrees compilations as a result of Surin's background music.

So for the people that have a Cheer in their lives, I have Surin. What is your favorite Birmingham restaurant or waterhole?

Pho Que Huong Vietnamese Restaurant in Birmingham, AL

I had a great meal at Pho Que Huong today on Green Springs Highway. According to PhoQueHong.com, "PHO, a uniquely Vietnamese creation, dates back to the 10th century and means "Noodle Soup". QUE HUONG means 'Native Village'".

Pho is located in a section of Birmingham that has really changed over the years. Green Springs showed early signs of globalization. You can get Korean, Mexican, and Vietnamese food all within a few steps. Mediterranean, Italian, authentic Chinese and traditional southern food are within a few miles. There is even a Peruvian restaurant posing as a Mexican restaurant three traffic lights away.

My first visit to Pho several years ago was with someone who spoke Vietnamese. He selected my dishes. It isn't a prerequisite, though. Neither the waitress nor I could speak Vietnamese. Today I took the safe route and ordered a chicken dish with lemongrass and mushrooms. One of my friends ordered a noodle dish.

FYI: Pho is actually in the Homewood section of Greensprings. Homewood is a suburb of Birmingham.

Tandoori Chicken and a Lassi at Kohinoor

I really enjoyed my dinner last night. Not a lot of people know about Kohinoor across from the Mellow Mushroom on 20th Street South. I love the food. I feel like I am cheating on Taj India since I spent most of my Indian food eating life at their buffet.

I started eating Indian food at Golden India when it was on West Valley Avenue. It relocated to Five Points South below Cosmos Pizza for awhile, but it went out of business. On my first visit, they had lady fingers or bendhi masala. Still unsure what I am talking about? Have you heard of okra? It is okra with stewed tomatoes, onions and wonderful spices. I once read that many Indian dishes have about 22 spices in them. I even slipped the dish into a family dinner with my relatives that don't eat Indian food. They recognized how flavorful it was, but I didn't tell them it was Indian food until well after the meal.

I am not sure when I started going to Taj. I think that Saffron was my second Indian restaurant in Birmingham. It was located near what used to be Ski Lodge I on West Valley. For a short time, I also used to go to a place that opened on 150. Can anyone remember the name of it?

If you aren't sure what to order, I always recommend starting with Tandoori chicken. I LOVE to get a mango lassi, which is a yogurt drink, to wash down the chicken. In most places in town, rice comes with the meal. If the restaurant has the option, order a basket of assorted naan.
