Birmingham International Center Spotlight on Ireland

The Birmingham International Center (BIC) kicked off its salute to the Isle of Ireland on last Friday. Guests were greeted by a menu of Beef Wellington, Irish soda bread and Guinness beer. Martin Rouine, the Consul General of Ireland, members of the Alabama Celtic Association and the BIC leadership set the stage for what to expect for the year. Finally, the evening was topped off with traditional Irish music by Chulrua, a duo consisting of the famous Paddy O'Brien and Pat Egen. Local dancers accompanied the duo. Alabamians can look forward to activities such music lessons, dance lessons, a geneology discussion, in school performances and a professional development workshop for teachers.

  1. interesting timing: I just began some genealogical research on ancestry.com. Although I'm trying to discern the possible French and German roots, along with verifying this Indian heritage thing I keep hearing (Choctaw in the mix lately, just heard of that), I'm certain there's some Irish in there too on my maternal side. Although it's stereotypical I've got too many red-headed kin folk (including two brothers) for there not to be Irish in there somewhere.
